Top 10 Songs of 2010 - Hindi

Okay. This is my attempt to try and compile the ten best songs in Hindi this year.

10. Hairat (Anjaana Anjaani)
Music - Vishal & Shekhar
Singer - Lucky Ali
Lyrics - Vishal Dadlani
Featuring - Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra
Director - Siddharth Raj Anand

Lucky Ali returns behind the mic after ages and as a result, we get a deadly song. The movie was lousy, the situation was lousier, but this song was nothing short of a cracker. Powerful vocals, sexy guitar interludes and some cool lyrics made this one of the best songs of the year. The video featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra driving through a desert on their way to Vegas was also done very well.

9. Uff Teri Adaa (Karthik Calling Karthik)
Music - Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy
Singers - Shankar Mahadevan, Alyssa Mendonsa
Lyrics - Javed Akhtar
Featuring - Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone
Director - Vijay Lalwani

Composer Loy Mendonsa's daughter Alyssa Mendonsa made a sparkling debut in playback singing with this helluva song which became an instant chartbuster. A song made for the discos, they embraced it with open hands and have been playing it non-stop ever since. Javed Akhtar proves that his age is no bar for thinking young and writing songs for the youth of today. The video has a sexy Deepika Padukone encouraging a shy Farhan Akhtar to dance inside a packed club. This song was one of the biggest hits of the first half of the year. Deepika's beauty in the video was an added attraction.

8. Gal Mitthi Mitthi Bol (Aisha)
Music - Amit Trivedi
Singer - Tochi Raina
Lyrics - Javed Akhtar
Featuring - Abhay Deol, Sonam Kapoor
Director - Rajashree Ojha

India's first chick-flick Aisha closes with this celebration song by Amit Trivedi collaborating for the first time with veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar. Again, a completely addictive track, it became an instant favourite at clubs and discos around the country. Amit Trivedi proves that there is no stopping him with each film of his. Tochi Raina's killer vocals along with Javed Akhtar's Punjabi lyrics gave more appeal to the tune. The video featured the wedding of Abhay Deol and Sonam Kapoor at the end of the movie and had the entire cast dancing away to glory. Perfect. The rest of the songs in the album were also equally great. The romantic Sham rendered by Amit Trivedi being the best.

7. Chham Chham Jaani Raatein (Striker)
Music - Shailendra Barve
Singer - Sonu Nigam
Lyrics - Jeetendra Joshi
Featuring - Siddharth, Nicolette Bird
Director - Chandan Arora

This has to be the best Sonu Nigam song in years. A beautifully rendered romantic ode, this song featured in the Indie flick Striker starring the talented actor from the South - Siddharth. The soundtrack of this movie featured songs by various composers and lyricists ranging from Vishal Bhardwaj, Amit Trivedi to Yuvan Shankar Raja. But it was this song by Shailendra Barve which stood out from the rest. A wonderful treat to the ears, it would be a crime not to include this song in the year's best list.

6. Pee Loon (Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai)
Music - Pritam
Singers - Mohit Chauhan, Kailash Kher
Lyrics - Irshad Kamil
Featuring - Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai
Director - Milan Luthria

Well, this definitely is one of the biggest hits of the year. And yes, the man behind it is hitmaker Pritam. Though the song sounds strikingly familiar to many of his earlier hits like Teri Ore, Pehli Nazar Mein, etc, the audience didnt mind that at all and turned this song into a huge hit, bigger than the film itself. Emraan and Prachi engaged in some old world romance from the 70s while Mohit Chauhan rendered Irshad Kamil's beautiful lyrics to perfection. Kailash Kher joined in to give a sufi touch to the song as well.

5. Do Nishaaniyaan (Jhootha Hi Sahi)
Music - AR Rahman
Singer - Sonu Nigam
Lyrics - Abbas Tyrewala
Featuring - John Abraham, Pakhi
Director - Abbas Tyrewala

How can any music list be complete without at least one AR Rahman song in it? Rahman's albums didnt create waves in the North as much as they did in the South this year. Raavan sounded way better in Tamil and Jhootha Hi Sahi, despite having a great soundtrack wasnt able to create the kind of impact usual Rahman soundtracks do, and of course, the whole CWG thing.  But, in spite of that, it is difficult not to ignore one of the maestro's best compositions in Hindi in the recent past - Do Nishaaniyaan, a beautiful sad number rendered with the right emotions by the exceptional Sonu Nigam. The movie didnt do justice to most of its songs, including this one which was just the background for a montage sequence where John and Pakhi were separated. The director Abbas Tyrewala was also the lyricist for the song and he did a very good job at that. 'I'll be waiting', an English-Hindi track by Vijay Yesudas was also another brilliant track from the album.

4. Madhno (Lamhaa)
Music - Mithoon
Singers - Kshitij Tarey, Chinmayi
Lyrics - Saeed Qadri
Featuring - Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, Kunaal Kapoor
Director - Rahul Dholakia

One of the most beautiful songs in recent times, this song featured two unusual voices - a talented newcomer Kshitij Tarey & the multi-talented singer from the South - Chinmayi. A soothing melody which you want to keep playing on and on, this song featured in the film Lamhaa set in the backdrop of a terror-struck Kashmir. The vocals by Kshitij & Chinmayi is the biggest asset of this song. Mithoon, who impressed us earlier with his music in Bas Ek Pal & the soulful Maula Mere Maula from Anwar, scores yet again with this gem of a track. Since the movie was a major flop, the song also went pretty unnoticed, but surely deserves its place on this list.

3. Sheila Ki Jawani (Tees Maar Khan)
Music - Vishal & Shekhar
Singer - Sunidhi Chauhan, Vishal Dadlani
Lyrics - Vishal Dadlani
Featuring - Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar
Director - Farah Khan

Now, now, now. This is the song thats driving everyone crazy currently. The 2nd best item song of the year, has a super-hot Katrina Kaif moving seductively to Vishal-Shekhar's tunes. Sunidhi Chauhan gives life to Sheila behind the mic and Vishal Dadlani joins in the fun later in the song. Farah Khan wanted a broadway meets desi kind of an item song as part of the film inside the film in her new release Tees Maar Khan which is opening tomorrow. The song lived up to its hype and is creating waves all over now. Katrina has never looked this hot before and her dancing skills have improved drastically from the 'Just Chill' days. It is an item song, with a classy feel, with a liberal dose of silly English lyrics by the composer Vishal Dadlani himself. All in all, a superhit track, which will turn even bigger once the movie releases.

2. Munni Badnaam Hui (Dabangg)
Music - Lalit Pandit
Singers - Mamta Sharma, Aishwarya Nigam
Lyrics - Lalit Pandit
Featuring - Malaika Arora Khan, Sonu Sood & Salman Khan
Director - Farah Khan (Song), Abhinav Kashyap (Movie)

This has got to be THE item song of the year. No other song had this kind of effect in the recent times. Ranked alongside the best item tracks to have come out in Bollywood, like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Kajraa Re, Beedi Jalai Le and the likes, both the movie Dabangg and this song came and took the nation by storm. Malaika Arora Khan, who is nearing her 40s, and mother of 2 children, looked unbelievably hot as the item girl Munni swooning to the Bhojpuri beats by composer Lalit Pandit. The desi flavour was the biggest plus point of this song. Munni dances in the den of the villain Sonu Sood, who clearly has a great time, until the cop Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) lands there and steals the thunder away from him. A cop who came to arrest the villain, starts dancing with the villain's item girl and makes the villain feel like an idiot. Now, thats a first. And Salman Khan was fantastically over the top in the song. He is also as much of an item in this song as his bhabhi Malaika. Almost all the other songs of the movie by Sajid-Wajid were superhits too. The song was choreographed & directed by Farah Khan even though the movie's director was Abhinav Kashyap. Farah has created some of the best item songs in Hindi Cinema including the latest Sheila Ki Jawani, but this arguably has to be her best. And she says that none of Salman Khan's steps were choreographed by her, it was all his spontaneous self. Yes, we love it!!

1. Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji (Ishqiya)
Music - Vishal Bhardwaj
Singer - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Lyrics - Gulzar
Featuring - Naseeruddin Shah, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi
Director - Abhishek Chaubey

Sheer bliss. There are no other words to describe this poetic masterpiece from the brilliant combination of Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzaar Saab. Undeniably, the best song of the year, this song celebrates love and beauty in all its glory. Gulzaar Saab brings magic through his poetry and Vishal Bhardwaj simply gives the perfect tune for it. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's silky voice melts one's heart each time he/she listens to this song. The beautiful video featuring Naseeruddin Shah falling hopelessly in love with the beautiful Vidya Balan and re-living his youth all over again. We couldnt ask for a better visualisation than that. One of the best songs of the decade, it would be foolish not to place this at the very top of any music list of 2010. My salutes to Vishal Ji & Gulzar Saab for this magical track.
P.S. - The film Ishqiya had a deadly soundtrack even otherwise, including the deadly 'Ibn-E-Batuta', the classical 'Badi Dheere Jali' and the beautiful 'Ab Mujhe Koi Intezaar'.

There were plenty of other great Hindi songs in 2010. My Name Is Khan's Sajda, Tere Naina & Noor-E-Khuda; Aisha's Sham & Suno Aisha; Anjaana Anjaani's Aas Paas Khuda & Tujhe Bhula Diya; Band Baaja Baaraat's Tarkeebein & Ainvayi Ainvayi; LSD's Love Sex Aur Dhokha; Housefull's Apni To Jaise Taise; Dabangg's Tere Mast Mast Do Nain, Humka Peeni Hain, Chori Kiya Re Jiya & Udd Udd Dabangg; Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se's title track, Tera Zikr & Sau Gram Zindagi from Guzaarish; Bin Tere & Bahara from I Hate Luv Storys; Zindagi Do Pal Ki & Kites in the Sky from Kites; Hey Ya from Karthik Calling Karthik; Man Lafanga & the title track of Lafangey Parindey; Indian Ocean's Des Mera & Raghubir Yadav's Mehengayi Daayan from Peepli Live; Kahaani Khatam Hai, Aazadiyaan & Naav from Udaan; Behne De, Beera Beera & Ranjha Ranjha from Raavan; Cry Cry, Hello Hello, Maiyya Yashoda, Call Me Dil & I'll Be Waiting from Jhootha Hi Sahi and the funky title track of Tees Maar Khan. It was very difficult to pick 10 best songs from such a huge list, but I hope these 10 surely deserve their places in the list.

  1. Feels like a top item song list:D
Sad that you miss raavan, Raajneeti and My name is khan

  2. where is Behne De? Where is Cry Cry?? Where is Mora Piya??? Where is Zor ka Jhatka??? And 'I hate luv storys' also had nice songs, you can't ignore them coz d movie was not a hit :O

may be I missed the better ones, but I haven't even heard half the songs in this list :(

  3. @Krishna, item songs are also songs. and they also turn into hits and are made for people to enjoy. and 2 item songs does not make this an item song list.

@athira, behne de was better in tamil and hence included in the tamil top 10 list. check that too. do nishaaniyaan was the better track in jhootha hi sahi than cry cry, hence included that. not particularly fond of mora piya. zor ka jhatka, i missed out. agreed. should have included that.

listen to the ones u havent heard from the list. i'm sure you would love them. but i dont understand which ones you wouldnt have heard.

  4. agree with top 1 only...hw cld u miss IHLS....also dhanno

  5. IMO, Sheila Ki jawani is just another over hyped bollywood song.. except for Katrinas moves, that songs a dud.. could have included MNIK's Noor E Khuda or Raavan's Behnde or Baand Baaja Barwaat's Tarkeebein instead of that...
rest of the list is accurate...

  6. forgot to mention Bahara of I Hate Luv Storys.. Shreya was magical in that song..

how do u know if i got confused while posting? this was clearly my choice of the ten best songs. IHLS had great songs. but i felt these to be better. and this is my list. not like THE list of the top 10 songs of the year. it obviously would reflect my choices. and dhanno, worked only because the main tune was from the old rd burman song from amitabh bachchan's kaalia. so that doesnt count.

@Dhanish, all those are great tracks, but didnt stay in your mind till the end of the year. and for me, sheila ki jawani didnt work initially, but now it does, very much. raavan was miles ahead in tamil and hence included in the tamil list.

  9. sheila worked and only for one reason KATRINA..notn else.....if these are ur fav 10 tracks 0f 2010 then no issues...otherwise munni and sheila along with dil toh bacha hai ji and no ihls , u have to be kiddn me.....

  10. i said u were confused bcoz u didnt mention it was YOUR TOP 10 SONGS OF 2010-HINDI'. 9xm,mtv,and v usuall shows munni and sheila abt 3-4times a day and dil toh bacha hai ji 1 or less time. bt song wise the later is far far better. so ur list has both class and maas hits and not so hits(songs from lamhaa,JHS i havent seen once in tv).

  11. Munni & Sheila are definitely great songs in their genre. And nothing can beat Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji no matter how many times it is played on tv or not. I mentioned this is MY attempt to compile the ten best songs, so obviously it becomes my list. and songs from lamhaa & JHS may not be shown on tv, but they're definitely great songs. go back and listen to them again. IHLS was definitely good. I had included Jab Mila Tu first, but then had to replace it with Uff Teri Ada.

  12. the reason i stated Bahara was, whenever I played that song in my car, n whoever is in the car has asked me which movie is that song from.. its a superhit for sure, owing its success to Shreya...

Sheila never impressed me excpt for Katrina.. the song doesnt have any creativity at all.. n now as the movie is a dud, the songs gonna sink with it.. but that wasnt the case with Munni... top notch item song..

gotto agree with u that Dil To is the track of the year.. it had something seducing n tricky in it.. again Rahat gave out his best..
