Vaanam is one of the most awaited Tamil films of the year 2011. A remake of the critically acclaimed Telugu film 'Vedam', this movie stars Silambarasan or STR as he calls himself now, after he got a makeover through Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya last year, along with his contemporary Bharath, the super-hot Anushka Shetty, the amazing Prakash Raj along with Santhanam, Vega, Saranya, Jayaprakash, Radha Ravi, Ganesh and Soniya Aggarwal who is making a comeback to Tamil films. True blue multistarrers like these are an extreme rarity in Tamil Cinema where we dont see two leading actors acting together in the same film very often. Slowly things are changing and more and more multistarrers are being attempted in Tamil Cinema now. Vaanam is one of the first movies to take that initiative. Simbu plays a cable guy in the film, Bharath plays a rockstar, Anushka plays a prostitute and the other characterizations are not revealed as yet. (People who have watched the Telugu original might know more about them). The movie has been delayed quite a number of times when it was actually supposed to release first in December 2010 & then in February 2011, but finally the movie is ready for release in April 2011. Yuvan Shankar Raja released a single track from the music album 'Evandi Unnai Pethan' written & performed by Simbu and the song became a rage all over soon enough. The rest of the tracks were released last week amidst much fanfare and have been received very well. The movie narrates 5 stories which criss-cross each other within the narrative of the film. Krish who directed the original Telugu version directs the Tamil version as well. The hilarious cameraman Ganesh from Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (also one of the producers of VTV) has produced this film along with acting in a role in it as well. Nirav Shah and Gnanashekhar have done the cinematography and Anthony dons the editor's role yet again. Here is the theatrical trailer of the film, featuring its soulful theme song performed wonderfully by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
